This course leads the student through intermediate level steps of the established Sanford Meisner Technique. Based upon some of the original theories and principles of the great Russian teacher-director, Constantine Stanislavski, and his work with the Moscow Art Theatre, the intermediate steps of the Meisner Technique provide a procedure of self-investigation.

The student seriously investigates the depths of his own instrument in order that it might expand, widen in range and in every way, respond to the subtleties of complex and delicate human emotional relationships and situations that an actor faces each time he prepares for a new role.

Aspects of the improvisation at this level include: Independent Activity, the Knock at the Door, Point of View, Emotional Preparation and Action. Each of these are introduced separately and become the building blocks of more complex improvisations, which lead to intermediate scene work.

This forces the actor to leave himself alone rather than acting for and by himself, to root his acting outside of himself and in another person or activity.

Sanford Meisner said, “What you do does not depend on you, but on the other person.” The actor will discover a strong sense of truth by developing an acute sensitivity to what is going on around him and adjusting to it.

In this advanced portion of the Meisner Technique, the actors learn to craft their independent activities to their fullest emotional, sequential, imaginative and challenging possibilities, as well as the crafting of their entrances and exits. Other aspects of the improvisation include the Domestic Exercise, the Shared Circumstance, and Life Goes on Activity.
